American Musicology Society Annual Meeting

American Musicology Society Annual Meeting

Friday, November 7, 2025Fri, Nov 7, 2025

Minneapolis, MN

Scandinavian and Somali music - A collaboration. Renee Vaughan (nyckelharpa), Harbi Mohamed Kahiye (percussion), Alaba Ilesanmi (keyboard), Sarah Pradt (hardingfele), Laura MacKenzie (wooden flutes), Paul Sauey (guitar), and special guest Rehanna Kheshgi (vocals). This concert highlights the musical traditions of Somali, Swedish, and Norwegian communities in Minneapolis, through the distinctive sounds of the nyckelharpa, a Swedish keyed fiddle, alongside the hardingfele, a Norwegian fiddle known for its resonant sympathetic strings, and wooden flutes. Somali percussion will also feature prominently, blending these diverse traditions into a unique and vibrant musical experience showcasing the cultural richness of Minneapolis’ immigrant communities, past and present. (open to conference attendees)
